AEP Texas crews continue efforts to restore service in west Texas areas affected by wildfires

April 11, 2011

SAN ANGELO, Texas, April. 11, 2011 – AEP Texas service crews are continuing their efforts to assess the damage and restore electric service as wildfires, which began Saturday afternoon, continue to burn in some parts of west Texas.

As of 1 p.m. on Monday, approximately 600 customers were still without power, primarily in the Fort Davis area.   Restoration of power for approximately 90 percent of the current outages is anticipated by midnight Wednesday, April 13.

Over 125 service techs are participating in the restoration efforts. That number is expected to increase as additional crews arrive in the area.  Repair of the transmission line from Marfa to Fort Davis is a primary focus of Monday’s activities, according to Fred Hernandez, AEP Texas manager of Community Affairs.   Late Sunday afternoon, AEP Texas crews energized a 2-megawatt mobile generating unit to restore power to approximately 700 customers in the Fort Davis area.

Hernandez said that the fires damaged some 120 transmission and distribution structures.  He added that crews replaced 28 of the damaged structures over the weekend; however, the number of damaged poles is likely to rise as damage assessment continues.

To report an outage or downed power line, please call (866) 223-8508.  Please considered any downed power lines extremely dangerous.
