Reliability & Tree Trimming

You depend on us to deliver your power reliably. And we take your trust seriously.

Kentucky Power is constantly working to improve reliability by minimizing the number and length of outages, and the number of customers affected by each outage. Below is a list of the many efforts made in 2023 to improve reliability for our customers, including pole replacements; switch installations, which keeps the lights on when outages occur and allows us to turn the lights back on faster when they do go out; porcelain cutout replacements with the newer polymer version, which are much more lightweight and durable; and the removal of thousands of trees outside of the right of way (ROW).

2023 Improvements By the Numbers

1,459 switch installations
1,397 miles maintained through vegetation management
271 pole replacements
1,409 cutout replacements
33,816 trees removed outside of ROW

Kentucky Power Uses Distribution Automation and Circuit Reconfiguration (DACR) to Improve Reliability

Of course, outages occur for a variety of reasons, including lightning, ice storms and animals. But one of the most common causes of power outages is tree limbs falling across power lines. Just one tree limb can knock out electric service to dozens of families up to several miles away.

Vegetation Management

That's why Kentucky Power has a comprehensive program to manage trees and brush that grow around power lines - and it has been shown to be effective at improving the reliability of our service to you.

We also have specific guidelines for tree clearing and right of way maintenance on our high-voltage transmission lines to help ensure the reliability of the regional power network.
