Rotary, Ky Power, Boy Scouts, ACTC partner to beautify community

ASHLAND, Ky. – The Rotary Club of Ashland and Kentucky Power have partnered with the Boy Scouts and Ashland Community and Technical College to improve curb appeal in the city.

One-hundred redbud trees donated by Kentucky Power will be planted on Thursday, May 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at ACTC’s main campus off 13th Street in Ashland. The planting is being coordinated by ACTC’s maintenance department, a local Boy Scouts of America troop, the Rotary Club, and Kentucky Power.

“Rotary International has requested that all clubs place trees in the ground equal to the number of members present in the community,” said Michael Huy, a board member with the Rotary Club of Ashland. “We are proud to work with Kentucky Power in achieving the goals of this initiative. It was really easy to work with the team Matt Satterwhite has established at Kentucky Power’s Ashland office in satisfying the need for trees identified by ACTC. We are also very pleased with the response of availability to assist with the planting work on such short notice by the Boy Scouts of America. I hope such collaboration can continue into the future.”

The eastern redbud is a large deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America.  The pea-sized blossoms of the eastern redbud emerge in early spring before the leaves arrive, covering the bare branches in garlands of pink. The leaves are alternate, simple, and heart shaped, thin and papery. The tree also is considered a low-growth tree, which is great for landscaping and will not grow so tall that they interfere with utility lines.

“Planting trees is an excellent way to improve the environment, add beauty to the landscape and improve air quality,” said Kentucky Power President Matt Satterwhite. “This project is truly a community partnership and we are proud to participate.”

Kentucky Power, with headquarters in Ashland, Ky., provides service to about 168,000 customers in all or part of 20 eastern Kentucky counties. Rotary brings together a global network of volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary of Ashland has about 100 members. ACTC is part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and offers 30 programs of study. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest Scouting organizations in the U.S. Its goal is to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and, at older age levels, career-oriented programs in partnership with community organizations.
