Kentucky Power recently hosted its Fall Emergency Management meeting with AEP’s Wildfire Mitigation team, the Kentucky Division of Forestry, community leaders and regional emergency management officials. The session focused on wildfire preparedness, response strategies and protecting the public while maintaining reliable service.

During the meeting, Kentucky Division of Forestry officials discussed fire season trends, burn laws and provided guidance for safe practices during high-risk periods. Fire season in Kentucky typically runs from January through April, when dry conditions and seasonal weather increase the risk of wildfires.
AEP’s Wildfire Mitigation team highlighted its data-driven Wildfire Mitigation Plan, which includes vegetation management, system inspections, risk mapping and continuous monitoring of fire conditions to reduce ignition risks and enhance readiness across its 11-state service territory.
The meeting focused on the importance of collaboration between utilities and local agencies. Kentucky Power and AEP work closely with emergency officials to share information, practice response plans and support community safety.

In addition to wildfire discussions, a Kentucky Power line crew provided a live line demonstration for attendees. Using a condensed setup of transformers, power lines and lights, the demonstration illustrated how everyday items and tools can conduct electricity, giving participants an up-close look at potential electrical hazards.
“It’s crucial to maintain and strengthen our relationships with community partners,” said Ryan Howell, external affairs manager for Kentucky Power. “These training sessions help strengthen our emergency response initiatives and strategies to safeguard customers and communities."
