With energy?costs top of mind for many customers, Kentucky Power is outlining several steps taken during January’s?cold weather?to help?manage?electric bills.???
“There’s no doubt the cost of?electricity?has gone up?for?our customers, so we have taken planned and proctive steps to help offset the winter bill spikes we see every year, but particularly this year given the prolonged stretch of cold temperatures,”?said Kentucky Power President and Chief Operating Officer, Cindy Wiseman. “Our responsibility is to?plan ahead,?operate?reliably and take?practical steps like these to help our customers manage costs and make electricity more affordable, which we are committed to?doing.”?
? Here are the steps Kentucky Power has taken:??
Ensured generating plants were available?to?operate?when they were needed most, helping reduce the need to?purchase?higher-priced electricity from the market.?
Planned?in?advance?of the cold weather by?hedging?natural gas?used at our generating plant, protecting customers from price volatility and resulting in approximately $4.8 million in?fuel cost?savings.?
Requested?the Public Service Commission to?allow?us to?defer?$5 million in?fuel?costs to help manage customer bill impacts.?
Worked?with regulators to?modify?its Fuel Adjustment Clause settlement so that fuel-related credits could be returned during winter months, helping offset seasonal bills when energy use is typically higher.? ?
In addition to managing energy supply costs, Kentucky Power continues encouraging customers to use programs designed to help avoid bill spikes caused by extreme weather:? ?
The Average Monthly Payment (AMP) program spreads energy costs more evenly throughout the year, helping customers avoid seasonal bill swings.?
Customers currently using traditional budget billing may benefit from switching to AMP, which can help avoid larger annual settle-up balances and provide greater month-to-month stability.?
Customers with electric heat are encouraged to apply for the EnergyAdvantage for Home?program?which?provides incentives, tools and resources that help customers improve energy efficiency and manage usage during periods of higher demand.?
