Summary
High winds and rain swept through eastern Kentucky late starting Thursday night through Friday afternoon causing extensive damage and widespread power outages across Kentucky Power’s service area. Wind gusts up to 64 mph in the Pike County area and up to 46 mph in Letcher County were reported by the National Weather Service. At the peak of the event, 16,400 customers were without power.
Current Situation
There are approximately 2,100 customers without power this morning. The majority of outages are in the following counties: Pike (786), Letcher (512), Knott (172) and Perry (132). Of the remaining 213 customer outages, 168 of those have 9 or less customers on each outage.
Storm Response Efforts
Nearly 600 Kentucky Power employees, contractors and mutual assistance crews are working tirelessly to restore power to customers as quickly and safely as possible.
Estimated Restoration Times
Most customers will have power restored by tonight. There may be some customers in remote areas where manual work is required who may have their power restored tomorrow. Customers can check the status of their outage at KentuckyPower.com/Outages.
