Powering Kindness: Kentucky Power Volunteers Help Feed Families Facing Hunger

October 24, 2025

Kentucky Power employees recently volunteered at Facing Hunger Food Bank’s mobile pantry in Greenup County, helping distribute food to hundreds of local residents in need. The team joined other community volunteers to set up stations filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, bread, meats, baked goods, pizza and boxes of nonperishable items.

Feeding America’s 2025 Map the Meal Gap research reveals there more than 280,000 people across central and eastern Kentucky facing the issue of food insecurity. Each year, Facing Hunger Food Bank supports nearly 130,000 individuals by providing essential food resources. This data highlights the vital role of the mobile pantry in assisting families to stretch their budgets and ensure they have food on the table.

Residents began lining up hours before the event, indicating the need for food assistance in the area. Volunteers worked efficiently, moving like a well-coordinated assembly line to load trunks, backseats and truck beds, ensuring families received a wide variety of nutritious foods.

Ryan Lake, external affairs manager and volunteer, said ongoing partnerships with local organizations like Facing Hunger, and a shared commitment to making a difference, are key to improving the quality of life across eastern Kentucky.

“When an opportunity arises to help address the issue of food insecurity, like Facing Hunger does every day, we jump on it,” Lake said. “Employee volunteerism is one of the many ways Kentucky Power lives out our commitment to the communities we serve. It reminds us that we can make a positive impact by helping our neighbors and serving those in need.”
