Confidence is high that a significant and impactful winter storm will move through the Kentucky Power service area this weekend, bringing a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain.
- Precipitation is expected to begin Saturday and end on Sunday as follows:

- Hazard / Southern Pikeville: 3 p.m. Saturday – 11 p.m. Sunday
- Ashland / Northern Pikeville: 4 p.m. Saturday – 11 p.m. Sunday
Northern areas are more likely to see dry snow, while southern areas could experience wet snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain.
- Ice accumulation remains the greatest concern, as ice combined with wet snow significantly increases the risk of tree damage, downed power lines, and power outages.
- While confidence is high that this will be a major storm, uncertainty remains in the exact storm track, timing and placement of the heaviest snow and ice. Even small shifts could lead to large changes in local impacts.
- Very cold temperatures and gusty winds are expected following the storm, which could slow restoration and create additional challenges.
Storm Preparations
Kentucky Power has activated all response teams and is fully mobilized ahead of this winter storm. There are nearly 700 crew members, contractors, business partners and external resources ready to restore power. Mutal assistance crews from other states are also on their way.

- Prepare for the possibility of extended outages, especially in areas expecting ice.
- Charge mobile devices and have flashlights, batteries and emergency supplies ready.
- Secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snow and ice.
Medical Equipment Use Advisory
Customers who depend on electrically powered medical equipment should ensure backup power options are ready and consider alternate locations if extended outages occur.
Safety Tips
- Stay away from downed power lines and assume all lines are energized.
- Avoid icy roads and falling tree limbs.
- Use generators outdoors only, away from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
