Summary
Kentucky Power crews continue making significant progress following severe storms, with wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, that moved through the service territory Tuesday. Since outages peaked at 19,291 customers last night, crews working around the clock have restored power to more than half of the customers affected at the peak of the storm. Less than 8,000 customers remain without power, with most of those customers being in the Hazard and Whitesburg areas.
Nearly 800 employees, business partners and contractors are working to restore power.
Weather
Additional storms with the potential for high winds and heavy rainfall are expected across eastern Kentucky this evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for much of the region through late tonight.
Incoming weather could impact restoration efforts. Saturated ground and additional storms could bring down more trees and cause new outages. At the same time, flooding, blocked roads and unsafe conditions could limit crews’ ability to reach damaged equipment and affect current restoration estimates.
Restoration Progress
Crews will continue working throughout the evening and overnight. Damage assessments so far include 46 crossarms, 20 cutouts, 28 poles, 282 spans of wire and 11 transformers. Assessments are continuing, and additional damage may be identified.
Estimated Times of Restoration (ETRs) are available on the Outage Map and will be updated as field crews make progress. Unless additional storms impact restoration, 95 percent of restoration will be complete in:
• Paintsville area (Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin, Martin, Morgan): Tonight by 11:30 p.m.
• Hazard area (Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, Perry): Tomorrow by 11:30 p.m.
• Ashland area (Boyd, Carter, Greenup Lawrence, Lewis): Tomorrow by 4 p.m.
• Pikeville area (Pike, Floyd): Tomorrow by 4 p.m.
• Whitesburg area (Letcher): Tomorrow by 11:30 p.m.
Stay Safe
- Never walk, swim or drive through floodwater.
- Stay away from downed power lines and anything they may be touching, including standing water, fences and trees.
- If using a generator, operate it outdoors and away from windows, doors and vents.
- Avoid electrical equipment that is wet or may have been submerged in floodwater.
