Advanced Meter Program

We're updating electric meters to continue improving the service we provide our customers.

Starting in October, Kentucky Power will begin installing new electric meters. Installations will be made in three phases across the service area with plans for completion by 2028.

The new meters, also known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) or smart meters, will provide customers with better information about their energy use while helping Kentucky Power improve outage response and overall service.

What the New Meters Mean for You

Your new electric meter will provide more timely information about your energy use while helping Kentucky Power improve service and respond to outages more efficiently. When your new meter is installed, you will also have access to a new convenient way to pay your bill called FlexPay—a program that lets you pay for your electricity in advance, like putting money on a gift card. You add money to your account and as you use electricity, the funds you added are deducted from your balance. Be on the lookout for more information about FlexPay!

Better Information About Your Energy Use

You don't need to wait for your bill to see how much power you home is using. Monitor your usage with easy 24/7 access from your smartphone, tablet or laptop through your KentuckyPower.com account.

Faster Outage Detection and Power Restoration

Your smart meter notifies us when your power goes out - even when you're not home. It provides information to our crews that improves response times and speeds power restoration.

Fewer Routine Meter Visits and Better Accuracy

AMI meters automatically report usage information and simplify the billing process by eliminating estimated bills, providing better accuracy for billing.

What to Expect During Installation

Over the next couple of years, we are replacing the outdated meters currently on your home or business. The new meters will empower you to have more control over your energy use, along with improved customer service. You will be notified via mail, email and phone before your smart meter is installed.

  • Kentucky Power or its licensed contractors will perform the meter replacement work. They will be in uniform, in marked vehicles, with proper identification.
  • You do not need to be home.
  • Please provide clear access to your meter and ensure your pets are secure.
  • You will experience a brief power outage during your meter change (approximately 5 minutes).
  • We will leave a door hanger when the work is complete or if any condition prevents the meter changeout.
  • For access issues or if you received notice that we were unable to change your meter and you need to reschedule installation, contact Mike Hatfield at 606-437-3840.

FAQs

Benefits

An advanced digital meter, sometimes called a smart meter, uses advanced metering and secure wireless technology to communicate between the meter and the utility and provides timely and accurate meter reading data. As Kentucky Power adds new home energy management tools, the AMI meters will give customers more information to manage their energy use and costs. The AMI meters also will enable future capabilities like faster response to new service connections and other service requests, as well as automatic detection of power outages for a quicker start to repairs.

Yes. Many electric meters provide monthly total energy usage, but AMI meters capture data at 15-minute intervals, providing customers with a much more detailed look at how they use energy. They can make more informed decisions about how and when to use energy in order to save energy and money. As Kentucky Power implements new home energy management tools, customers will be able to access their information by smart phone, tablet or laptop.

Customers should have access to these tools approximately six weeks after the smart meter is installed.

Yes. The meters and the associated communication system are encrypted and equipped with security features to prevent unauthorized access. Kentucky Power is required to comply with all federal laws regarding the privacy, protection and disclosure of personal information. State law prohibits Kentucky Power from providing customer information to outside third parties without the customer's express permission.

No. All communications equipment meets criteria set by the Federal Communications Commission and should not interfere with any equipment inside a home or business.
