Using Drone Technology to Increase Reliability

July 31, 2025

Kentucky Power is committed to improving and maintaining the reliability of your electric service. That's why we use drone technology to help us maintain our infrastructure more efficiently and effectively, ensuring that we can maintain high service quality and address any potential issues proactively.

How drones help:

Kentucky Power crews and contractors use drones to inspect power lines, poles and the equipment that provides electricity to homes and businesses nearby.

Drone technology enables us to:

  • Access hard-to-reach areas
  • Quickly and efficiently inspect infrastructure
  • Gather precise data to assess equipment condition
  • Prioritize necessary maintenance and repairs

When circuits are being inspected:

  • Crews and contractors may be seen walking near power lines. They wear hard hats, high-visibility vests, and ID badges with identification on their vehicles.
  • A certified drone pilot operates the drone near power lines to capture imagery and data. All of our drone pilots follow Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commercial guidelines.
  • All customers on a circuit being inspected by drones receive an email from Kentucky Power alerting them of the project for awareness. To be sure your contact information is up to date so we can contact you if necessary, log into your account settings.
