Kentucky Power grant awarded to Lawrence County will aid in economic development plans

December 6, 2022

ASHLAND, Ky., December 6, 2022 – Kentucky Power recently awarded a $30,000 economic development grant to Lawrence County. The grant is funded through the Kentucky Power Economic Growth Grant (KPEGG) program.

Lawrence County will use the grant to employ a consultant agency and other services vital to identifying viable sites for development and potential industrial property in Lawrence County.

“Our goal is to support programs that impact eastern Kentucky economic growth,” said Amanda Clark, Kentucky Power external affairs manager. “This funding will help Lawrence County build on its strengths and showcase its potential to support industrial businesses that will bring jobs and provide a successful future for that area.”

Clark mentioned the grant was awarded in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the Big Sandy Power Plant.

“This grant was awarded just in time to celebrate the long history Lawrence County has had with the Big Sandy plant,” she said. “We have much gratitude for the successful partnership the county has had with the plant all of these years.”

The Big Sandy Plant sits along Highway 23 in Louisa and produces approximately 295 megawatts of natural gas electricity for Kentucky Power customers.

The KPEGG program assists in the funding of economic development programs that promote the creation and retention of manufacturing and/or industrial investment and jobs. The program is a partnership between Kentucky Power and its customers. Commercial and industrial customers contribute $1 monthly; and company stockholders match the customer contributions to generate nearly $800,000 annually for investment at the local and regional levels. The program is available in all 20 counties served by Kentucky Power.

Grant applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of employees and delegates of the Kentucky Association of Economic Development and the Kentucky Economic Development Cabinet. More information is available at kentuckypower.com/development.
