Kentucky Power has been selected to receive funding through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) grant program to support upgrades at the company’s Mitchell Plant. The $51 million grant will be used to invest in needed improvements to the plant, while helping to reduce cost impacts for customers.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved Kentucky Power’s application to construct the Prestonsburg-Thelma Transmission Line Rebuild Project. The project, which was first announced in 2022, involves rebuilding approximately 14 miles of transmission line to 69-kilovolt (kV) standards, retiring approximately two miles of 46-kV transmission line and retiring two switch stations.

Across eastern Kentucky crews are focused on vegetation management, equipment upgrades and new technology all designed to reduce outages and shorten restoration times.

Kentucky Power has filed an application with the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) seeking approval to construct a new cooling tower at the Mitchell Plant. The project is necessary to ensure continued access to reliable baseload energy at the lowest cost for customers.

With energy costs top of mind for many customers, Kentucky Power is outlining several steps taken during January’s cold weather to help manage electric bills.   

The Kentucky Power Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to Appalachia Reach Out (ARO), an organization dedicated to serving families across Eastern Kentucky through housing support, community outreach and essential services. Grants and contributions are not included in customer rates. Kentucky Power employees also stepped up as volunteers to help with the rebuilding of a home destroyed by flooding earlier this year.

Kentucky Power recently hosted its Fall Emergency Management meeting with AEP’s Wildfire Mitigation team, the Kentucky Division of Forestry, community leaders and regional emergency management officials.
