Kentucky Power’s annual food drive generated two tons of food and $50,000, support equivalent to more than 378,000 meals

Kentucky Power presents the 7th Annual Power Up the Pantry food drive and fundraiser at four locations across eastern Kentucky. All donations directly benefit God’s Pantry Food Bank, serving food pantries in southeast Kentucky, including Hazard, Pikeville and Prestonsburg; and Facing Hunger Food Bank, which serves food pantries in northeast Kentucky, including the greater Ashland area and surrounding counties.

Kentucky Power is monitoring the potential for severe thunderstorms across its service area this afternoon and evening and is prepared to respond if storms cause power outages.

The Kentucky Power Foundation is investing in the future of Kentucky students with a $25,000 grant to the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky in support of its Craft Academy Scholarship Fund. This grant will help the scholarship fund reduce financial barriers for Craft Academy graduates as they pursue undergraduate degrees.

Appalachian Power and Kentucky Power representatives are upgrading the transmission system in Pike County, Kentucky and Mingo County, West Virginia. The project involves rebuilding approximately 6 miles of 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line, building approximately 3 miles of 46-kV transmission line, and building the Peter Creek Substation to replace the Barrenshe Substation

Kentucky Power offers multiple ways to help customers manage higher summer electric bills and avoid disconnection. Disconnects are a last resort, with notices and reminder calls sent in advance of any cutoff. Available options include payment arrangements, payment extensions, budget billing through the Average Monthly Payment plan, referrals to community assistance resources, and energy audits and efficiency programs to help reduce future usage. The first week of July is bringing a heat wave that has air conditioning units humming and fans turning as Kentucky Power customers try to beat the heat. 

. Kentucky Power’s System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), an industry measure of how long customers are without power, has improved by nearly 70 minutes over the past year. The company has reduced average outage duration from 197 minutes last year to 168 minutes this year—that's a 15% improvement so far.

Kentucky Power has been selected to receive funding through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) grant program to support upgrades at the company’s Mitchell Plant. The $51 million grant will be used to invest in needed improvements to the plant, while helping to reduce cost impacts for customers.
